6 Unbelievable and Amazing Medical Miracles

Some people escape death or permanent body injuries by means that cannot be explained scientifically and can be termed “medical miracles”

Some stories are shocking, bring hope and others are just plain unbelievable. Below are some of the amazing medical miracles recorded

1. Surviving a Spike through the Head

Phineas GagePerhaps one of the most famous medical miracle stories that students of neurology are told is that of Phineas Gage.  In 1848, Gage (25) was the foreman of a construction company preparing the bed of a new railroad line, when an explosion forced a 3 feet 7 inch (~110 cm) long rod through his head.  The rod entered through the man’s cheek and exited through the top of his head.

Miraculously Gage survived but unfortunately, he experienced obvious personality changes, and eventually died eleven years later after suffering from increasingly severe seizures.

2. Waking up from coma after 19 years

Warsaw, Poland: Jan Grzebski was 46 years old when he slipped into a coma as the result of a brain tumor. Doctors had not expected Grzebski to survive, let alone emerge from the coma.

Man wakes up after 19 yearsAmazingly with continuous physical and emotional support of his wife, he lived long enough for the tumor to shrink, relieving enough pressure in his brain to allow him to wake up. He awoke 19 years later.Grzebski was a father of  four at the time he went into coma and while in a coma he gained eleven grandchildren .

Grzebski was able to enjoy his new life for a full 18 months before passing away in 2008, which may be considered unfair considering how many years he spent in hospital. One might have wanted him to live much longer with his wife.

3. Man Survives Being Stabbed Through Head

Knife in brainIn 1998, 41-year-old Michael Hill answered the door only to have a 8-inch(20 cm) knife stabbed through his skull and into his brain. Michael then walked down the street with the knife still in is head, until he arrived at a friend’s home.

He was taken to the hospital, and the knife was successfully removed. Hill survived, but his memory has been affected, and he suffers from seizures as a result of the horrifying attack.

4. Living 118 Days without a Heart

girl lives 118 days without heartMiami, Florida: July 2 was supposed to be a great day for 14-year-old D’Zhana Simmons, who received a transplant to replace her enlarged heart. However, her dream turned into a nightmare when the new heart failed to function properly. Doctors had to remove the new organ, but without another heart available and with D’Zhana weakened from the surgery, they had to come up with a stopgap measure: two artificial pumps that kept the blood flowing in her body for close to four months.

The achievement was newsworthy because of D’Zhana’s age and partially because when an artificial heart is used to sustain a patient, the patient’s own heart is usually left in the body. Finally, on October 29, D’Zhana received another heart transplant, and it was so successful.

5. Woman Survives Decapitation

Denver, Colorado: A 30 year old Shannon Malloy was involved in a horrible accident that sent her head hurtling into her car’s dashboard. Her spine separated from her skull, meaning that all that was holding her head onto her body was skin and muscle.

The condition is medically known as “internal decapitation,” and more than 90% of people who experience it die. However, within a month of having her skull reattached to her spinal column with screws in her neck and shoulders, Malloy left the hospital with an undamaged spinal cord and she maintained the use of her arms and legs.

6. Baby born twice

babyborntwiceLaredo, Texas: While still in the womb, Macie Hope McCartney developed a tumor that grew to the size of about as large as Macie herself at four months into her mother’s pregnancy. The tumor was stealing the girl’s blood and weakening her heart and had to be removed if there was any chance of her survival.

That meant performing surgery which came with only a 10% chance of her survival, because doctors had to partially deliver the four-ounce (113.4 g) fetus, pulling 80% of her lower body out of the womb and quickly remove the tumor while avoiding complications due to fetal exposure to the air. Beating the odds, Macie was delivered a second time, 10 weeks later with a clean bill of health.
