Alcoholism is usually a problem associated with people who suffer from severe depression as a result of the death of loved one, loss divorce or even loss of a job. Scientists at Santiago, Chile are hoping to develop a vaccine that would make an alcohol abuser to suffer severe hangover, like headaches and nausea after taking a few glasses of alcohol.
According to The Iquistr, the vaccine will be have a unique psychological lean to it. The idea is to get alcoholics to associate drinking with miserable side-effects and illness instead of fun, relaxation, or a coping mechanism.
How will the vaccine be delivered?
The team of researchers hopes to conduct a clinical trial in India, when doctors will inject people with the vaccine for the first time. If all goes well, the vaccination could be available as soon as two years from now, according to Dr Juan Asenjo, director of the Institute for Cell Dynamics and Biotechnology at Universidad de Chile.
What the lead researcher said
In an interview with The Santiago times Dr Asenjo said, “People who end up alcoholic have a social problem; a personality problem because they’re shy, whatever, and then they are depressed, so it’s not so simple. But if we can solve the chemical, the basic part of the problem, I think it could help quite a bit”
However even though the vaccine may help in alleviating alcoholism, there are also fears that some people who have had the vaccine may turn to other harmful substances as alternatives to alcohol
